Bergliebe : Nebelhorn and Nordwandsteig Peak Walk

Memories are still so fresh, and I barely haven´t recovered yet from the blissful mountain moments I´ve had last weekend. So here it is, another series from my Bergliebe stories. This time we´ve reached the Nebelhorn and Nordwandsteig in Allgäuer Alps, with Oberstdorf as our base.

The benefits of living in Bavaria is that within 2-4 hours of drive, depending how you fast you go in the Autobahn and where in Bavaria you´re starting, you are transported into a different world.I mean, it´s like no excuse not to be outdoors ,except when you are an introvert yourself, and waste all your time just sitting in front of the TV and swiping into the virtual world.

I have never known before that such places exists until I began my wanderlust “Wandertags” or hiking days here in Germany and getting lost to different places, especially finding bliss in nature paradises. Can anybody relate to my addiction?

See that view from above…? amazing right? If you can´t appreciate a view of nature like that then I am wondering what can really take your breath away?

Munich itself is not just famous for Oktoberfest, a world -renowned Beer festival which until now, I have never been to.I only went to local Beer Festivals (or Volksfests) around here and that for me is enough. But then an hour or two drive away from Bavaria´s capital lies the beautiful Bavarian Alps and many beautiful mountain peaks, alpine lakes , Gorges, waterfalls and places to have a good hike. There are even stunning castle ruins, fairy tale castles inspired by our famous Bavarian King Ludwig II.Most of these places can be accessed with public transports, with the Deutsche Bahn and many regional trains.

On the other side, I prefer this world–the natural world and forest, not the man made & steel forest. For me this is living.Bergliebe as I call it is a passion I have learned to have eversince I moved here.Mountains in Philippines are also beautiful and reachable, but higher peaks have great challenges since we don´t have the modern system that we have here in Europe.Nowadays, here high altitude peaks can be accessed by anybody, even babies ,dogs and people with disability can be in an altitude of more than 2,500m within minutes if they really want to.With the most modern cable cars here in Germany, anything is possible and there´s absolutely unlimited mountain fun for everybody.

So Nebelhorn really deserves a spot in my Blog because its something special to me, just like how I´ve felt about Kanzelwand and Fellhorn–the hike we´ve made crossing the borders between Germany and Austria.Nebelhorn is by far the most modern Bergbahn that I have ridden and probably the best up until now.Its also quite very pricey.Imagine having a panoramic view of almost 400 peaks in front of you is really something.I have seen Zugspitze Massiv from up here and the Zwölferkopft that we´ve hike from Achensee and Pertisau.Even if you can´t hike them all, seeing those peaks is quite unforgettable experience. It´s ordinary for others but for me, they are quite special.

Braving the altitude and dizzy ride is another thing.I hate adrenaline rides in themeparks so my daughter, who is crazy about those mind-boggling rollercoaster rides do those things with her Father, because I just can´t.I don´t know if its vertigo but I feel sick about those things. But climbing and hiking a mountain is different.Well gondola rides are another thing–they make me giddy as well so sometimes I just close my eyes. The moment I stepped out of the cable car and began the ascent to the summit, i am making great memories. It takes courage of course, and guts.

Walking through the crazy Nordwandsteig is something that I have never imagined that I could do until I really made that very first step. But with this view in front of me…i dare myself to beat my fear.Small steps, and another and I almost go through with it, and went on another round.

Right after we reached the summit cross, we proceed to follow the crowds going through a small tunnel which leads to the Nordwandsteig–a state of the art 100m walkway made of steel that was attached to the Nebelhorn northern wall.Engineers are really something to think of crazy things like this.Unbelievable what they do to the mountains! Here we´ve seen the massive beautiful panoramic peaks of the Allgäuer Alps. Here itself is another dimension—a place in your imagination that comes alive.the colors, the shades and contours of the mountains made me shiver because they seemed to be alive and changing from every angle! I was so excited at the same time really shaking because looking down the cliffs and steep contours is no joke. This is the highest point I have ever been to.Can´t believe that even strollers and wheelchair can pass here.

I guess fear of heights can be conquered and looking on the beauty in front of me helps.I am just totally amazed of the beauty of nature up here in Nebelhorn. One should try to see and be at these viewing points and see the summit and be humbled.Looking down, I see people wandering and walking like ants.So little, so tiny. The Hofatsblick station looks like a tiny lego piece ,pinned on a vast pastureland covered with snow.I realized that climbing a mountain can really be invigorating, liberating, and at the same time strengthening.

I have been always fascinated by high altitude mountain climbers. Mount Everest is another level but for people who practically endeavours themselves conquering peaks and summits are just incredibly phenomenal. My daughter is with us the whole time and she played in high altitude playgrounds here in Austria, Germany and Italy. It´s crazy thinking chilren playing slides and digging the sand pit in such high places like these.

Once again, my child reached the peak, as if nothing special to her and I´m glad to share this moment with her.She looked forward immediately going back to the hotel and play games with her friends online. This is what raising your child in Germany looked like–bringing them to incredible hikes like this and seeing snow in October!

Down at the valley, the surroundings are still on the forefront of Autumn beauty, but up here in Nebelhorn, the mountain speaks with you with a mighty silence.Funny thing, its minus temps up there but people just wear shorts and normal sneakers ,walking and laughing in snow.I guess that time had changed…and I have no control over it.

Looking down at the deep Gorge and ridges, I was asking myself what´s in there and how is it that such places exists. But then I would always wanted to stay more longer, and linger to being up here.Probably a run over the ridges in summer is possible..my imagination goes on and on.

They have a very modern restaurant up here where you can enjoy some delicious food, and esp.warm drinks. I especially loved the slices of cakes and a cup of warm chocolate that I have tried from the restaurant. There are many Alpenhuts so there is no chnace that hikers can go hungry. While sitting there with the majestic views, i observed the people who worked on this high altitude Huts and restaurant.I wonder how do they get the motivation to ride the cable car everyday for work especially when its peak season.

Do they get mountain-sick as well? or are they not fascinated with this beauty since they see it almost everyday?

My thoughts continues to fly away as I watched this black bird amuses us with his acrobatic moves. So long Black bird, and Nebelhorn, and the rest of your peaks, hope I see you again soon in Summer.

Closing up with this quote :

“Don´t leave your coffee for too long, and be surprised that it is cold…”

I am not talking about the Coffee, missed opportunities cannot be undone.

Do you love mountains? Share me your thoughts.

Until then, stay safe everyone and thanks for reading.Tschüß!
