A unique walk in Leutascher Geisterklamm

My daughter is super excited already for Halloween. She´s 9 years old and she grew up here in Germany with the traditional Süßes oder Saures…or as we know it Trick or Threat. In a few weeks she will be walking around again in our neighbourhood wearing her “trendy” Halloween outfit and looking for Ghosts, carved Pumpkins and devouring lots of sweet goodies.

From our last nature walk, we were kind of looking for mythical creatures, haunted spirits and ghosts as well.We were exploring Oberammergau area and after spending a beautiful afternoon admiring King Ludwig´s best kept Castle in Linderhof, we made another trip in the town of Mittenwald. Few kilometers from here we found ourselves excited for another exciting nature hiking and exploring the Leutashklamm or also known as Geisterklamm.

This fabulous gorge lies on the border of Austria and Germany. It is the Leutasch gorge on the border of Bavaria and Tyrol, originally called Leutaschklamm or Leutascher Geisterklamm. One of my other favourite Gorge was also near the area, the Partnachklamm which we explored when we explore the area of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

This hike was very family-friendly. There are various trails that suited for every group so you can actually choose what suits you. There is even a trail that is accessible for strollers and little children. The moment we start our hike, we saw some signages which tells stories about ghosts, spirits and traditional stories about the area. My daughter was keen on seeing a “Geist” or ghost!

If you have Vertigo and afraid of heights then you must take precaution because the walking path along the moutain walls can reached up to 100 meters. It is such an amazing beauty of nature if you look at how the Gorge is carved by moutain rivers over milleniums of years. It is deep, narrow and mysterious.Real beauty indeed takes time and this is another example where nature amazes me.I am always amazed by Gorges and how it is being formed since it is a natural wonder.

Here, as we walked through steel hanging bridges with metals ropes and pathways, we can enjoy looking down and hear the strong water gush. It is an amazing experience! My daughter keeps on dancing through the walks because yes, she likes heights, and no fear at all.I´ve read that there was an accident here before where large rocks caused a heavy erosion in the Leutaschklamm. Thank God no one was hurt but it was closed for repair for two weeks.

We tooked various stops just to admire the green forests that surrounds the area. The mountain view from the hanging Bridge is far by my favourite. It is really a great experience to see the Leutaschklamm from this vantage point. It is one of challenging walk we´ve had because I am afraid of looking down. Thanks to modern technology that even small children and older people can access this beauty without problem .

What I loved about the “Koboldpfad” is that there are 40 incriptions telling about various mythology and details about the Flora and Fauna that can be found in this area.Known as the Spirit Gorge, I was wondering how does it feel to hike around the Gorge at night. I haven´t tried shouting and hearing my own echo through the moutain sides but I think that would be exciting.Kobolds are little creatures that believed to lived in the woods.

One of the intriguing stops we´ve made is from this point where we have a great view of the river. The color of the water is turqouise, light blue then turning into bluegreen. We continued to hike through the forest and these stones surprised us. It is very common to see this stack of stones whenever we hike in the mountains. The most vast stacked stones I have seen was in the valley when we hike through the Neuschwanstein Castle in Füssen.

Finally we´ve reached the border between Bavaria and Austria.Through this path, we continue to walk back to the parking area.

And of course a quick pit stop to play in this wooden Stonehenge -like playground. As soon as we reached the parking area , we made a stop in the restaurant and grab something to drink. They have clean bathrooms as well so we are happy all in all about this experience.

If you are in the area of Mittenwald, make sure to check out this Gorge, you won´t regret it!

What was your most unforgetable nature walk so far?

Until then, Servus and Tchüss!
