My Dolomites Chronicles : The Alpine Flower Garden in the Dolomites

Who doesn´t love flowers?

In my recent trip to the Dolomites last June, I was quite super fascinated about the variety of beautiful spring flowers that I´ve spotted during our hike. I´ve written in my previous Hike to Seceda that Dolomites is a one of a kind destination–and seeing it for real is the only way to be mesmerized by its natural beauty.

Below is my gallery of the flower show that we´ve seen last month. The open air garden display is so special . It´s really a wonderful world up in the peaks!

As I am researching for our trip, I already read that a visit around late June in the Dolomites would reward us with plenty of beautiful alpine pastures covered with yellow, purple , blue and unique mountain flowers. That got me really excited. Aside from the mountain itself, Dolomites region is a haven for flora & fauna. I lost count how many cows, goats, horses, donkeys and lamas we have seen. They are all there.

Your eyes will feast on these little beauties that just pop up in between rocks, gravel and mountain sides, much more enchanting when they surround the turqouise blue lakes.I don´t have any other explanations about them, they are just pretty and makes the hike more worthwhile and scenic!

So let my photos do the storytelling…

I mean, I could stare at these vast area for the longest time and still trying to understand why its so beautiful up there? Thousands of meters in high altitude they greeted us with such a positive spirit; that these flowers are example that resiliency is a virtue. Despite the harsh climates esp. in winter, these flowers thrive and made it to bloom in Spring. It´s like each flower tells a story.

Yellow fields are everywhere in the Dolomites. These yellow flowers are constantly gazing at the beauty of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo ( Drei Zinnen), Val Gardena, Gaisler Alm, Val di Funes and Alpe di Suisi, they are really everywhere. When we arrived in Süd Tirol, we drived through the serpentine roads leading to the mountains and in every corner, the views offered unrivaled beauty.I think from my experience, the only bad views that I´ve had in the Dolomites are the full packed parking areas in Lago di Braies and going to the Rifugio di Auronzo en route to Tre Cime.

But then, seeing these flowers, it somewhat always made our day.

When we did the hike in Alpe di Suisi, we just got lost from the tracks because everywhere we go, we are surrounded with fields covered in carpet of flowers.Unbleievably beautiful. So peaceful, so calming and real.

It is said that there are more than 800 species of wildflowers in the Alpe di Siusi. Popular varieties include Soldanella Alpina (Alpine Snowbell), a purple ice Bellflower, my favourite!, that usually blooms before its counterparts; and Papaver Alpinum (Alpine Poppy), a bright yellow cup-shaped flower that grow in clumps on rocks. Last but not the least is Cyclamen whose unmistakable shape and colors are difficult to go unnoticed. When I see it, I must take a photo or else I would regret it!

During our various hikes, our legs ache so much, mainly also because of the previous days toiling and mountain grinding. But when we look at these flowers, it gets lighter somehow. It exceeds my expectation, seeing the flowery Dolomites is quite an unforgettable experience.

I can´t wait to see the Dolomites once again in Autumn.
