The Beauty of Manholes Pt.3

Another snapshot of where I am standing.

Is this a Mannloch ( or Manhole) ? Or just another street art ?

It´s been a while but now it´s time to give you once again an update of my series of looking at the beauty of manholes.Odd it may seems to others but for me, I always find beauty in looking down. How manholes looked like in every places makes every journey unique and exciting. It´s a kind of rare identity, a personal character of the city, a distinguised landmark.

I think it was 3 years ago that I have began to take photos of manholes and blogging about it.Sometimes they are nice, some are just plain and ordinary. Some made it to my finest list and the rest is history. If you would remember my first fascination about looking down–well, that is because of the Stolpersteine–stumbling stones–the small square memorial for the victims of WW II which was really an eye-opener for me.Since that time, it became a habit for me to look down from time to time to take notice what is written down on aisles, streets and pathways.

The art of looking down can be mastered if you really try to slow down a bit, not walking in haste, and not always focusing on grand, vibrant things around you. It is easy to be distracted especially if its up on high and we all need to look up.There are really many fascinating facets you can discover if you try to look down–or look for manholes.Sometimes I learned about the fine streets, cobbled ones or rough ones, its all part of the journey.

Some of the manholes I´ve seen around here in Germany were posted in my second part of Beauty of manholes. It´s a lovely habit that I am planning to do for the rest of my wanderings.Germany, especially here in Bavaria, they really have nice ones and every one is unique. But still, the one we´ve seen in Bratislava is quite special!

In Seoul, South Korea, I have seen very unique ones and I am sharing these with you now.The streets in Seoul are really busy but I have noticed that street art and creative corners always exists.I love that kind of vibe–it means the city is alive, and coninually in progress.

“Looking down and embracing the beauty under my Feet…”

So why do I took time to look down?

For me, I looked down to admire the little, simple things in life that makes life extraordinary.Whether its a street full of snow, with golden yellow leaves and muddy puddles, every season brings out the beauty of the earth.I am on a journey of appreciating more of life, rather than complaining about it. I hope that this post and Manhole series would inspire you to look more than the picture.

How about you, when was the last time you took notice of the paths you are walking?

Until then, in Bavaria, we say it “Servus und Tschüss!”

  1. Nice! Ik like to picture these things as well. Every city has it’s own kanaldeckel and often they are real pieces of art. The top image is especially interesting with the swastika-toes!
